Catherine Phelps

Graphic design and illustration for web and print

Museo Prerrománico Spain.
In 2007 Catherine Phelps was given the job of designing the identity, interior distribution, displays, publicity material and merchandising for a small museum in Santianes de Pravia. The museum is housed in an old rectory which was totally rebuilt to house important pieces from the 14th century found in excavations in 1970.

As well as designing all the graphic and display elements, Catherine used local craftspeople to build and install the displays using wood and stone from the surrounding area. She used her own illustration to enliven the screen printed wall displays and commissioned a contemporary jeweller to make pieces inspired by Asturian pre romanesque motifs for the shop. At its inauguration the museum was described as a “small but perfect jewel box” by the local press.
